What is Mixing?

The art of mixing isn’t based on rules, rather on principles. There are no standards to use in every mix you manage. By training our ears to look for the smallest details in certain frequency ranges to point out or correct that which is standing out, mixing engineers aim for achieving a “perfect” mix. There is a knowledge involved of sound design, acoustics, digital processing of audio signals and to some extend even the recognition of genres and how to apply effects onto each layer of this work of art, which we call mixing.
A mix needs to be balanced, dynamic, have a certain amount of width and depth and acoustic errors need to be fixed wherever. Experience is the key of becoming a good mixing engineer. This craft can’t be learned in a day or week. 

What is Mastering?

Mastering is the last step in the creative process of producing music for physical or digital release. There are standards to compare your music with in terms of loudness, to make sure your track is in the ballpark of nowadays hit songs. It’s an art to master this craft in the days where the loudness war has been present for some time now. Making your track louder isn’t what we are aiming for, but keeping dynamics and making sure it’s as loud as most tracks in digital stores, so your music sounds professional in every way. Most label managers demand a specific quality before they release any track.
